A big thank you to Miss Mercer and her team for organising this for Joondalup Schools, the feedback from staff and students has been extremely positive.Online Safety for Parents and Carers
As parents and carers, you know your child better than anyone and have the best opportunity to support and guide them to have safer online experiences. The Office of the eSafety Commissioner is Australia's leader in online safety. The website offers a downloadable guide which covers some of the key online safety issues for young people and includes a range of practical tips and advice on what to do if things go wrong. You can also find a list of important services that can offer extra support. Please visit https://esafety.gov.au/parents/ for further information.

School Board Vacancy
The School Board is seeking a parent representative to fill a vacancy on the School Board. If you are interested in being part of our School Board please contact Ashley Gunning, the Chairperson via email, ashley.gunning@education.wa.edu.au or Tammy Hanrahan on 9233 5800.
The Board’s role is to take part in establishing and, from time to time:
- Reviewing school objectives, priorities and general policy directions and the financial arrangements to fund these;

The Board meets twice at term on Wednesdays from 6.00-7.00pm. Our next Board Meeting is on Wednesday 18th September.
2020 Class Room Personal Items Booklists
Next year we will be using a new supplier – Ziggies Educational Supplies. In Term 4 we will be sending home Personal Items Lists for next year. If you are unfamiliar with Ziggies, they are a local company based in Joondalup. We made the decision to use Ziggies as our preferred supplier because their prices are extremely competitive, and there are so many options for families to access materials.
JPS Website
Our website is currently under construction, we are changing over to Schoolzine, the same company that designs the school newsletter. The timeline will be between 9-12 weeks. Thank you for your patience during this time. We anticipate by switching to Schoolzine, the website will be a lot easier to navigate as well as easier to locate specific information about our school.
Thank you to the P&C
Our P&C have recently organised bottles of sunscreen for each classroom. Perfect timing as the weather becomes warmer. Students are encouraged to put sunscreen on before play times.
Our P&C also approved the funds to donate a mud kitchen for our Junior Playground. The mud kitchen has been purchased and installed in one of our sand pits in the Junior Playground (where the boat used to be.)
If you notice any suspicious activity on School Grounds, please contact Security on 9264 4771 or the Police on 131 444.
On Friday 6th September the whole school took part in Wellness Day which was organised by Miss Mercer.
There were so many activities for the students to take part in and it was fantastic to see all staff and students having fun.
Here are a few photos from the day.
The students really appreciated all the hard work that Miss Mercer and our helpers put into organising the day. Here are a few letters from some our the students.
Science News with Mrs Phillips
Science Lab News
What is Earth and Space Science?
Earth and space science (or ESS), is about Earth and its place within the solar system and universe. It includes the study of the Earth, including its land, oceans, atmosphere, and all the life that lives there from humans to animals to plants. It includes the water cycle, the carbon cycle, the rock cycle, and anything that gradually affects the Earth over time. The 'space' parts talks about the Earth's position in the solar system, and it also explores the solar system and universe as a whole. Understanding the wider universe helps us get a sense for Earth's place.
Throughout Term 3, JPS students have stepped into Earth and Space science by engaging in a variety of experiments. Pre-Primary students have become meteorologists and have been busy study the weather patterns, the symbols used to describe the weather and how weather affects the types of clothing and activities that we do. In Year One, students have been exploring, predicting and observing changes to the sky and land over several sessions in the lab. In Year Two, students have been plunging into resources with an in-depth study of the water and rock cycle.
The Year Three students have been astronomers studying day and night, as well as the role of the sun and moon. Geology has been the focus of Year 4 with many field experiments being conducted to identify soil and rock types, erosion and weathering. Year 5 students are on an astronomical journey exploring the 4 rocky planets and 4 gas giants within the solar system. Lastly, the Year 6’s have been erupting with excitement as they have built the inner earth and tectonic plates to be able to identify 3 different types of plate boundaries and the natural disasters that are caused as a result of this.
BASF Kids Lab Excursion
On Thursday 29th August 2019, 30 students from Joondalup Primary School and 10 students from Joondalup Educational Support Centre were invited to attend a program at Curtin University. The program was focused on providing students with an opportunity to step into a chemical laboratory and conduct a variety of experiments that are used as a basis in real life situations.
Students were provided with the opportunity to observe a reversible chemical reaction using a magical blue substance and discussion focused on the importance of using the senses when making accurate observations. Then they explored the properties of a variety of super absorbent polymers to find out which one would make the best absorbent nappy.
JPS and JESC students then put on their laboratory coats and safety glasses and assumed the role of a chemical scientist in the Curtin University Laboratory. In the laboratory, they conducted, hypothesised and observed the results from a heat changing worm experiment, they conducted, observed and summarised the results of using different primary and secondary colours in a chromatography experiment and they were given the opportunity to create their own toothpaste and then compare the reactive ingredients between their own natural toothpaste and a Macleans brand.
The BASF excursion was an opportunity for our JPS and JESC scientists to observe and experience science in a real life setting. It was an exceptional educational excursion and even more inspiring to witness the scientific understanding and engagement of those that attended.
Science Enrichment Program
Joondalup Primary School offers an after school science program that aims to inspire young people to become science leaders. The program is designed to cultivate and pass on a sense of wonderment and scientific curiosity by engaging students in a variety of hands on investigations that explore all the fields of science as taught in the Australian Curriculum.
In addition to the volcanic, ice-cream, bread making and slime experiments that the students have been conducting, they will also be involved in an excursion to BASF Kids Lab at Curtin University, a day exploring the scientific wonders at Scitech and an excursion to Belridge Secondary College Science Laboratory.
Congratulations to the following Year Four students who have been chosen for the program in Term Three; Joanne, Stephanie, Cooper, Aston, Oriana, Esther, Brianna, Indy, Keira, Caleb and Andy.

Music and Arts Night News with Miss O'Connor
What an exciting term it has been! Preparations for Arts Night is in full swing. The Arts Night permission slips have been distributed to students and already there has been an outstanding response for student attendance. The letter contains all the details relevant to the evening and the student dress up. Please ensure your child returns their permission slip to their classroom teachers by Friday 18th October. If you have more than one child attending, please make sure each student returns their permission slip to their classroom teacher. If you have any questions, please come see me in the music room.
Week 10 Choir Assembly: Australian themed
It has been a very exciting term for the Choir students as they have been busy preparing for their Australian Themed assembly. This is going to be show stopper of a performance and we cannot wait to wow the audience with how fantastic the Choir is. A letter will be sent home to all Choir students with details about the performance.
On Friday 30th August we all participated in Wellness Day. I was fortunate enough to facilitate a session with Years 3-6 students on what makes them happy.
What does your family do for fun?
We all have such busy lives, with work and school, juggling homework, chores and schedules of extracurricular activities. Sometimes we forget to do things for FUN!
One of the best ways to connect as a family and to feel happy is to do things you enjoy together. We need to fill our own cups before we can effectively give to others.
What are some fun things you can come up with to do as a family?
Here are some examples the students came up with in their session:
- Family picnic (Even in the back yard)
- Go for a bike ride
- Go for a bush walk
- Fly a kite
- Go to the beach – even in winter it is so nice to rug up and go and collect shells
- Go ice-skating or roller-skating
- Go fishing (Even if you don’t catch anything)
- Look for frogs or tadpoles in the lake (This one is so fun)
- Go camping
This week, make a list as a family of some of the things you would like to do for FUN. Then try and tick one off your list every week. Have fun connecting!
