With thanks
Last Wednesday the P&C Association held their AGM at which a number of key leaders stepped away from their roles. We would like to thank Tanya Belsham for her work as P&C President, Lyn Alldred as Vice President, and Tanya Servodio as Secretary. Each of these people have contributed above and beyond to the school community through the P&C and the school community is richer for their enthusiasm and expertise.
Because of them, and the many others who volunteer, the P&C has made significant contributions to the school through discos, sausage sizzles, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day stalls, assistance at whole school events such as the Arts Night, improvements to Nature Play, and ensured that we have a 5-day canteen and school banking.
I would like to welcome Hazel Brooks to the P&C Association as the new Vice President. Thank you for nominating for the position and congratulations on your election.
At the end of the meeting, the P&C Association were not able to fill the positions of president and secretary. Not filling these positions does not mean the end of the P&C Association, rather we are in caretaker mode and this makes a few things more difficult to do.
Last Wednesday’s meeting was very productive and positive so if fear of meetings is preventing you from taking part, don’t let it be. As a group, the members are highly supportive. We won’t let the new president or secretary fail and there are plenty of people who will do their part to make these jobs not too difficult. If you are interested in either of these roles please come and speak to me. I can fill you and then link you with someone for further advice.
Numero tournament
The Year 6s have been locked in a fierce knock out Numero tournament. Last Tuesday the final game was played between Kayden and Forum resulting in Kayden winning by three cards. Congratulations to Kayden who has proven to be a Maths whiz!
Numero is a card game that helps children mentally recall and use basic facts between 0-15. The skill in the game comes with being able to add and subtract multiple numbers to create one number between 0-15.
Winning faction
Last week the Blue faction children celebrated their Term 1 win with an ice cream in the sunshine. Congratulations to all of the children on being awarded tokens. The Term 2 competition has kicked off with Blue in the lead again. Green is coming a close second.

Staff news
At the beginning of next week, we are welcoming back Mrs Maureen Lahti and Ms Karen Tucker to the Year 3 classrooms. I am sure that the children will be delighted and I do know that both teachers are looking forward to returning to school.
I would like to thank Mrs Leanne Freeman and Mrs Heidi Cobbledick for their work in the past four weeks. It has been wonderful to have two experienced teachers step into the classrooms during these uncertain times. Their work has been very much appreciated. Mrs Cobbledick will continue working Wednesdays in Year 4, Room 4 and I am sure that we will see Mrs Freeman back at school as a regular on our relief staff.
WA Week dress up day
To mark WA Week, children are welcome to dress up for WA Week on Friday 5 June 2020. Children can wear anything related to WA – WA football team colours, come dressed as a convict, dress in old fashion clothes or simply wear yellow and black, our State colours. Teachers will support WA Week through their learning program and there will be a colouring in competition for students to enter.
End of semester reports
COVID-19 has impacted on what and how the Western Australian curriculum has been taught in all classes. It has meant that information collected about how rigorously children can be assessed against the judging standards isn’t the same. Student attendance has also meant that some children have missed some chunks of learning, and some has been done at home and some at school or a combination of both.
The Department of Education has given approval for schools to change what we include in the end of semester reports.
For this semester we will not give an A-E grade or use the five-point scale for any learning areas. Each of them will be marked ‘not assessed’. Teachers will provide a comment for English and Maths and a general comment that notes the progress that children have made since the beginning of the year, as well as the effort put into lesson participation. The report will also record a rating for Attitude, Behaviour and Effort.
Specialist teachers will provide an overview of the content covered during first semester.
Information provided will be enough for parents to determine if children are on track for maintaining their grades and if there are areas for concern that need to be addressed.
Once you have received the report and if you have questions about your child’s progress, you can contact the class teacher to arrange an interview which may be by phone or face-to-face.
Semester 2 reports should be normal with each student receiving a grade for learning areas.
At next week’s school development day, the staff will be reviewing the reporting to parents process for Semester 1.
If you notice any suspicious activity on School Grounds, please contact Security on 9264 4771 or the Police on 131 444.
Well done to our Superstars this week who have brought some fantastic work up to the office.
Worry doll creativity
The children from Room 14 have shown off their creative skills to make worry dolls using dolly pegs and pipe cleaners.
Worry dolls originally came from Guatemala and are used by children (and adults) to help solve their worries. The tradition is that children tell the doll their worries, sadness and fear and then put the doll under their pillow, sleep on them and, in the morning, everything is much better.
Well done to the Room 14 children.
The students in PP - Year 3 revised the elements of line and colour. Using lines of their choice and the primary colours they created monsters.
Welcome back to another exciting term. We have had an interesting but exciting start in the Music room!
Lower Primary
The Pre-primary and Year 1 students have been studying the musical element of tempo. They recently explored fast tempo through Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s orchestral piece Flight of the Bumblebee. The music paints a picture of a bumblebee buzzing chaotically about! The students had the chance to fly about the music room being bumblebees! This piece was composed in 1899-1900 but is still used frequently in popular culture. Fun fact: this piece featured in the 1993 animated series Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog as part of the show's opening theme.
The Year 2 and 3 students have been exploring the instruments of the orchestra. The instruments of the orchestra are divided into sections- the strings, woodwind, brass and percussion. The students have covered the string and percussion families so far. They have enjoyed playing on the various pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments in the music room. Did you know that the orchestra can have 100 or more musicians playing at one time?
The Year 4, 5 and 6 students have embraced the sunshine and worked outside the music room. They have studied the elements of tempo and dynamics, listening to environmental sounds as they explore how these elements can be heard in every day sounds. They have listened to Edvard Griegs In the Hall of the Mountain King and discussed how these elements of music have been used as a tool to create the music. Before they listened, the students read a story about Peer, a mischievous boy from Norway, who ventured off into the forest one day and came across a castle. Feeling adventurous, Peer snuck into the castle and began creeping around. Little did he know that the castle belonged to the Mountain King and he was trespassing- he was an uninvited guest! Peer got himself into a bit of trouble when he bumped into the Mountain King and had to run away or suffer the wrath of the Mountain King! We discussed how the music used these elements to tell the story of Peer and the Mountain King.
Wednesdays in the Art room with the Pre-primary and Year 1 students has been so much fun. We have continued to explore the elements of line and the primary colours with the creation of our Monsters! We have begun exploring the element of texture and how different surfaces can contribute and shape our art work!
Dear Parents,
Re: Cashless Canteen Update
If you wish to order recess or lunch for your child, but don't wish to proceed with the online option; Quickcliq, then simply call the canteen & set up an account over phone via VISA or Mastercard.
Recess - your child needs to come to canteen in the morning on their way to class to place an order, it will then be ready at recess for collection.
Lunch – simply fill out a lunch bag & your child is to place it in their class room crate or drop at canteen on their way to class.
Monies spent will then be deducted from account accordingly. You will receive an SMS alert when funds are getting low.
Birthday cupcakes are still available to be ordered through Quickcliq or alternatively give us a call 9233 5818.
We would like to thank you for your positive feedback regarding move to a Cashless System. We appreciate it is a big change and have been overwhelmed by such a great response.
Thank you
Carolyn
